IndieWIRE.com:
Shelia M. Sofian's six-minute short "Conversations With Haris" is a touching documentary narrated by an 11-year-old Bosnian immigrant as he recounts his experiences in the war in his homeland. The film is beautifully made using painted animation, and set against Haris' thoughts on the war and the deaths of so many of his close family, the film illustrates how startlingly adult a child's thoughts can be. It brings to mind the old adage: Out of the mouth of babes. It's painfully clear that adults should listen to children far more often than they do.
by Mark Rabinowitz
Vjesnik, (Croatia) June 23, 2002:
"The Modern Man moves towards Nostalgia"
Sheila M. Sofian, representing America, made the film "A Conversation with Haris" which is an animated conversation with an eleven-year old Bosnian boy, an immigrant to the United States. He recollects his experience of the horrors of the war and his family drama. Seemingly older than his age, he comments on the situation in a mature and decisive manner and defends his perspective. The artist’s paintings on glass visually follow the events and in combination with the boy’s voice accentuate the tragedy even more.
From Osvrt- Internet Monitor (Croatia):
"Even Better Animafest – The fourth day"
Another disturbing film comes from the US by creator Sheila M. Sofian. She records a conversation with an 11-year old Bosnian boy named Haris. In an extremely composed and detached manner, he talks about events during the war in Bosnia which are most often personal. Furthermore, when such a documentary tonal device is combined with animation media the result is an unsettling film more real than life.
www.filmbrats.com:
HARIS is a little boy who has witnessed some of the war that’s going on between Croatia and Serbia. Through this wonderfully animated piece, we get honest, direct responses to some potentially difficult questions. Haris gives us his intriguing personality, but he can’t give us his hope because he has little of his own. This is another film that I wish would have gotten a higher prize.
by Jon Waterman
irresponsiblecybernetics.com:
Using a documentary interview with a young Bosnian immigrant as her soundscape and hand-painted animation as her pallet Sheila Sofian allows the viewer to experience the violence and tragedy one boy’s family endured in A CONVERSATION WITH HARIS. With dignity and maturity beyond his 11 years Haris recounts his life and the family members he lost.
Canadian Children's Literature, no. 109-110, Spring-Summer 2003
http://cybrary.uwinnipeg.ca/cclj/reviews/109-110stukator.shtml
There were a number of documentaries that employed unusual and highly idiosyncratic stylistic devices to render difficult but important subject matter. In A Conversation with Harris (Sheila M. Sofian, USA, 2001), animation is used to represent Harris's world. An 11-year-old Bosnian boy, Harris now lives in the United States. He tells of his experience in the Bosnian war and of the series of tragedies his family experienced. The animation does not strive for verisimilitude; rather it becomes, through the colour, texture, and density of the painting, a visual manifestation of Harris's emotional landscape, his world turned nightmare.

Cowboys in Kosovo dir: Corinne van Egeraat | 24 min. | Netherlands
In Yugoslavia, American westerns were endlessly repeated on television. Four Kosovo friends used to play cowboy, like so many children everywhere - in a landscape that seems to come right out of those films. At the start of the war one of the four friends fled to the Netherlands, one fought in the Kosovo Liberation Army and two others escaped from torture in captivity. Now they return to talk about the war.
